kate cledwyn – MY STORY
For a large part of my life, I lived surrounded by fields, trees, flowers and animals. I spent my time raising my children in this stunning environment. I hatched out chicks, ducklings, raised puppies and kittens, spending time collecting eggs, feeding goats and pigs, mucking out donkeys and chasing peacocks out of my kitchen – I loved that world! I liked to watch the interactions between them all, understanding their characters and was fascinated by their shape texture and their movement.
I enjoyed handling them, seeing them grow and change as the aged. These experiences are what inspired me to sculpt. I feel I gained and retained a vast knowledge of their physical features and form from those interactions.
Then in 2010, I moved to London – my life changed; my children had ‘flown’ and I had more time for myself. I packed up with a cat and a dog and found my new home with my plans to study art.
I completed various courses in sculpture and ceramics and then enrolled at Heatherleys School of Art to do my diploma in figurative sculpture – I loved it.
I completed my diploma and having gained the skills I needed, I now have my own studio in Fulham, just a stone’s throw from the river. I am truly lucky being able to spend my time doing what I love.
