I was asked to design and sculpt a Barn Owl for a garden in Hampshire. It was needed for a specific position at the top of their garden at the end of a new fruit tree-lined path.

My clients wanted a focal point at the far end of the path and had already put an archway through a newly planted yew hedge.

The archway was actually at the end of their garden and therefore for effect only and not going to be an actual opening so it would be possible to place the owl inside the space. I decided that it would look good to fill in the back of the arch with a sheet of steel and to have the owl fixed to it and sculpted in a swooping pose as if it was flying in and about to land on a half-open, waist-high, wooden garden gate.

My Clients, David and Bridget were excited about my idea and embraced it fully.

They now have the first (cast in cold cast Portland Stone) of the 15 editions of this owl which they called 'Wol’ and he is looking good with the new hedge maturing around him.
